Grass attack

commended the value of the scale of the project, but cautioned that there are 'lots of unknowns', such as how plants might migrate along it. " We are going to be looking at this for a long time, " he said. The first landowner to buy into the scheme is the Australian Bush Heritage Fund, a non-profit organisation that buys land for conservation with both government funding and private donations. It has acquired a 13 square kilometre property, south of Canberra, as a key part of the new corridor. This Scottsdale reserve lies in the Murrumbidgee valley and comprises eucalyptus woods and grassy plateaus and will help protect a range of endangered plants and animals including grasses, fish, platypus and quolls. The eventual corridor will approach the length of the Yellowstone to Yukon corridor in North America, which runs for 3,200 km. A major problem facing Australian conservationists is the widespread invasion of many foreign species, which threaten the continent's unique species. One of the first tasks at Scottsdale will be the control of weed species such as the African lovegrass and serrated tussock, which have invaded native woodland and threaten key native grass species. " If we can get these native grasses to return we'll see birds and insects coming in, and seeds being moved around, and the habitat will begin to recover, " says Owen Whitaker of Bush Heritage. " What we are essentially trying to do is go backwards. We are taking good, fertile farming land and turning it back into a functioning ecosystem. " " Not all farmers can do this, of course, because they have to make money, but all properties can be improved and reduce the impact that they have on species at risk. " Bush Heritage chief executive officer, Doug Humann said: " With less rainfall and more frequent intense fires predicted for the south of Australia, and an increased risk of cyclones and extreme rainfall over the north, extinction rates are set to soar unless action is taken. " Atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations have increased from around 280 parts per million (ppm) in preindustrial times to around 380 ppm today and are expected to exceed 600 ppm by the end of the century. Current levels are probably higher today than they have been for at least 650,000 years. Over the past half million years, evidence suggests levels have more often been closer …

A 425 T>C polymorphism in complement C7 association with resistance to Aeromonas hydrophila in grass carp.

Aeromonas hydrophila, a widespread bacterium in the aquatic environment, causes hemorrhagic septicemia in fish. In the last decade, the disease has caused mass mortalities and tremendous economic loss in cultured fish. The complement component C7 is a terminal component of complement that interacts in a sequence of polymerization reactions with other terminal complement components to form a mem...

Spittle protein profile of Mahanarva spectabilis (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) fed various elephant grass genotypes.

An understanding of the interaction between spittlebugs and forage grasses is essential for establishing factors that favor productive pastures. In the present study, we evaluated the protein profiles of the spittle of Mahanarva spectabilis (Distant, 1909) (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) fed various elephant grass genotypes. Each plant was infested with a single fifth-instar M. spectabilis. After 24 h,...

Alkaloid toxins in endophyte-infected grasses.

Grasses infected with clavicipitaceous fungi have been associated with a variety of diseases including classical ergotism in humans and animals, fescue foot and summer syndrome in cattle, and rye-grass staggers in sheep. During the last decade it has been recognized that many of these fungal infections are endophytic; a fungal endophyte is a fungus that grows entirely within the host plant. Ins...

FOUNTAIN GRASS CONTROL IN Hawai`i VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK: MANAGEMENT CONSIDERATIONS AND STRATEGIES

Fountain grass (Pennisetum setaceum), perceived as one of the most disruptive alien species in Hawai`i, has threatened native ecosystems below 3,940 ft (1,200 m) elevation in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park for about 30 years. Because this species has spread rapidly to high densities on the leeward side of Hawai`i Island, invaded bare lava flows (which results in disruption of primary successio...

Wireworm Control using Fodder Rape and Mustard – evaluating the use of brassica green manures for the control of wireworm (Agriotes spp.) in organic crops

Wireworms are a soil-inhabiting crop pest. Larvae attack many crops, particularly potatoes, and even low populations can cause an economic level of damage. In the UK, high wireworm populations are traditionally associated with long-term grass leys (Parker and Howard, 2001). In the case of organic production, potato crops frequently follow a long-term fertility-building grass ley. Organically gr...

Ecological play in the coevolutionary theatre: genetic and environmental determinants of attack by a specialist weevil on milkweed

1 We studied the genetic and environmental determinants of attack by the specialist stem-attacking weevil, Rhyssomatus lineaticollis on Asclepias syriaca . 2 In natural populations, the extent of stem damage and oviposition were positively correlated with stem width, but not stem height. We hypothesized that both genotypic and environmental factors influencing stem morphology would affect attac...
